Amazon Unveils Its First Smartphone with Firefly — Only on AT&T

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the company’s first and long-awaited smartphone Wednesday years after competitors Apple and Samsung have built a stronghold in the phone market.

Amazon’s Fire phone comes after four years of research and development. The phone operates in an Amazon-themed world, where with Firefly things can be identified, listed, ranked, shared and, of course, ordered.

Dynamic Perspective uses a custom-designed sensor system that responds to the way you hold, view, and move your phone. It opens up a new class of immersive apps and games not possible on other smartphones, as well as one-handed navigation and gestures like auto-scroll—read long web pages and books without ever touching the screen.

The Amazon Fire Phone, which will be available late next month, costs $199 with a two-year contract with AT&T — including a year of free membership in the Prime club. Like Apple’s iPhone, the phone will only be available initially via AT&T wireless phone service.
