District 214’s school board voted Thursday night to drop out of the National School Lunch Program, which will result in a loss of $900,000 federal subsidy covering the costs of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch.

The northwest suburban district includes Buffalo Grove High School, Elk Grove High School, Forest View Alternative School, John Hersey High School, Prospect High School serving students in the communities of Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows, and Wheeling.

In a unanimous vote, the six high schools of the district are now free from following USDA guidelines regulating any food sold in the cafeteria or in vending machines. Food items have to contain fewer than 200 calories with zero grams of trans fat, contain less than or equal to 230 milligrams of sodium, and either have to be “whole grain-rich” or primarily made of fruits or vegetables.
