Twenty-three were injured with one person critically injured in an a multi-vehicle crash on I-94 just south of Michigan City that occurred about 2:20 p.m. Thursday. The pileup crash occurred on eastbound Interstate 94 near W 400 N or E Kieffer Road in Michigan City, Indiana.

At least one person was trapped in near zero weather for about four hours. Rescuers feared that several more people were trapped in their vehicles, and were at risk of dying of hyperthermia if the crash injuries didn’t kill them. By 5:00 a.m. all vehicles were removed except for on semi-trailer truck.

A critically injured person died at the hospital. Two people were killed at the scene.

LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan reported Jerry Dalrymple, a 66-year-old man from Chicago, was killed. Also killed were Thomas Wolma, 67, who was pronounced dead at Franciscan St. Anthony; and his wife Marilyn Wolma, 65, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dalrymple was traveling from Chicago to LaPorte when he was killed. He was pronounced dead on the scene. His Golden Retriever also died in the accident.

The couple was headed home after caring for a relative in Wisconsin.

At least ten victims were transported to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Michigan City. Six people were transported by ambulance to IU La Porte Hospital. About 15-20 people with minor injuries (or no injuries for checkup) were transported to IU La Porte Hospital in a bus.

The LaPorte County HAZMAT team responded to the scene as well. Flourescent green diesel fuel leaked from ruptured semi tanks made the scene slippery and hazardous, Sullivan said.

Witnesses say heavy lake-effect snow was falling at the time of the accident, creating white-out conditions.

All but one semi-trailer truck was removed as of
