Maritime attorney James Walker explains that cruise ships might have cameras on the deck, but the cameras aren’t monitored, and there’s no connection to an alarm. Cruise ship companies claim they haven’t found a good system that works at sea.
However, ABC News reporter Reena Ninan demonstrated a “Man Overboard” system that uses a laser to detect people falling overboard. The alarm sounds and a strobe light activated before Reena Ninan even hit the water. A computer display is shown pinpointing a calculated location of the person in the water.
Sarah Kirby is suing Carnival Cruise Lines even though she was rescued. Kirby was rescued after floating in the water for about 90 minutes.
