Overnight: Wounded Arlington Heights Police Officer Stable in Recovery Room; NIPAS, MCAT Investigators Remain at Crime Scene

VIDEO: Police activity where police officer was shot and a gunman was barricaded in a townhouse with a female hostage on Thursday night.

Arlington Heights police responded about 6:52 PM to a report of a man with a gun in a townhouse just northwest of Arlington Heights Road in Palatine Road behind the Palm Court restaurant. When police officers tried to enter the townhome in the 1900 block of Windham Court, they were met with gunfire. The gunman fire at an Arlington Heights police officer, striking the 20-year-verteran in the lower face and neck area. Additional police officers were able to pull the wounded officer to safety from the location where he was shot, which was near the entry way to the townhome. Immediately, firefighters/paramedics responded and transported the injured police officer to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. He was described as “in critical, but stable condition” as he was stabilized at the trauma center. He was in surgery overnight and was in the recovery room by 1:00 a.m. Friday.

Meanwhile police activated the NIPAS SWAT team who took command of the scene to negotiate and resolve the standoff with the gunman. The gunman had a female hostage. The gunman is also believed to be an ex-boyfriend who came to the home, just northwest of the major intersection of Palatine Road and Arlington Heights Road. Palatine Road was blocked in both directions as the westbound lanes were filled with at least 50 vehicles from backup police officers, NIPAS SWAT members, negotiators, NIPAS medics and other tactical members.

Just before 11:00 p.m. three shots were heard, and paramedics were then called in to the townhome. The gunman was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he was pronounced dead at 11:02 p.m. The female hostage was transported in another ambulance to Northwest Community Hospital for observation.

VIDEO: Crime scene processing and evidence gathering was a painstaking task overnight.

Overnight, NIPAS vehicles remained on scene, including three Bear Cat vehicles that were positioned right up to the front of 1917 North Windham Court. Two large NIPAS vans with lighting were also parked southbound on Windham Court. A Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT) van was parked westbound on Wheeler Street near Evergreen Avenue. Also three Illinois State Police Crime Investigator Units were parked on Wheeler Street.

Police told reporters that there would be a prolonged period of evidence collection overnight.

The nearest intersection close to the incident address is Windham Court and Wheeler Street. The focus of police efforts appeared to be 1917 North Windham Court at the south end of the Cul-de-sac, where the back of the townhouse faces Palatine Road.

A police officer was inside the townhouse and was shot in the neck. Another police officer was able to pull him out of the townhouse and he has since been transported to Level I trauma center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Police were working to negotiate with the gunman a female hostage is inside the townhouse, and are hoping for a peaceful resolution.

The gunman was shot shortly before 11:00 p.m. and was captured after allegedly shooting the Arlington Heights police officer and taking a woman hostage.

The hostage was able to escape unharmed. Officials say the police officer was a 20-year veteran of the force, and was shot in the face. He is in critical but stable condition.

The situation is secure, and emergency medical crews are leaving the scene.

  1. At least 50 vehicles with officers seems like a lot to me considering it was just one guy with a gun. At least they didn’t miss.
