Off-Duty Cook County Sheriff’s Investigator Shot and Killed While Breaking Up a Robbery

An off duty Cook County Sheriff’s investigator attending a family gathering at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Bellwood was shot and killed while he was reaching for his own weapon to break up an armed robbery he was witnessing. Cuauhtemoc Estrada, age 50, stepped out of the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall at 200 30th Ave, Bellwood, IL ‎about 7:30 p.m. and witness an armed robbery occurring in the parking lot. He was shot in the chest. He was transported to Loyola University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m.

Cook County Sheriff’s police investigators and the Bellwood police are investigating the shooting and homicide. No suspects are in custody at this time.

Also overnight, three ambulances responded to a report of victims with gunshot wounds at Thorndale Avenue and Route 83 at about 6:10 p.m. Bensenville police were on the scene, but no information is available at this time.
