Vail Street Market Jewel-Osco Rids Itself of Self-Checkout Lanes

#ad▼

Jewel-Osco has removed their self-checkout lanes. The move marks a surprising reversal of automation that began about a decade ago when grocery stores began installing self-checkout lanes. In fact all 100 of Albertson’s stores that have self-checkout lines will be discontinuing the automated method of checkout.

When Mariano’s Fresh Market opened, they promoted the fact that they did not have self-checkout lanes. Did Albertson’s learn that Mariano’s was right?

Once thought to be a solution to long lines, some grocery experts and grocery managers are claiming they doubt that the lack of human contact is good for business.

Could there be a dirty secret that more retail shrinkage occurs at self-checkout? Many people like the convenience of checking out themselves and getting through quickly.

What’s next the service man pumping your gas and checking your oil at the service station?
