President Barack Obama canceled Operation Bright Star plans for joint American-Egyptian military exercises Thursday, announcing the first U.S. reaction to the spiraling violence in Egypt.

If the U.S. were to declare Morsi’s ouster and arrest a coup by the military, the Obama administration would be legally required to cut off military aid. So far the “language” of the overthrow has avoided words “military coup.”
