CNN’s Brooke Baldwin talks with valedictorian Roy Costner IV about his bold decision to break the rules at graduation.

Roy Costner IV did not tip off any school authorities that he would recite The Lord’s Prayer in his graduation speech, after he learned that he would not be permitted to say the prayer. When it was time for his valedictorian speech at Liberty High School in Liberty, South Carolina, Costner ripped up his speech and recited the Lord’s prayer and casually talked about his Christian upbringing.

The School District of Pickens County, including Liberty High School, has a policy against prayer in school, but no disciplinary action was taken Costner.

The population in Liberty is about 3,000 as of the 2000 census.

Full Speech …

After the school district ruled that a prayer was no longer going to be performed at any school functions including graduation, which prayer was replaced with a moment of silence valedictorian Roy Costner adds the Lords prayer into his speech, with the crowed showing tons of support. Video was recorded by Brian Dismukes.

The Lord’s Prayer is a central prayer in Christianity.

  1. He will probably need a lot of prayers to find a job in this marketplace. Another appropriate prayer for new graduates:

    The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
    He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
    He leadeth me beside the still waters.
    He restoreth my soul:
    He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’ sake.

    Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;
    Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
    Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
    Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over.

    Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
    and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.
