Mass. State Police Capt. Paul D’Amore reports high school students and their adult chaperones were on a charter bus after a visit to Harvard University when the oversized bus crashed into a bridge in Boston, injuring more than 30 people, including several seriously.
A charter tour bus hit the Western Avenue Bridge over Soldiers Field Road in Alston at 7:55 p.m. Saturday, apparently after the bus driver missed or ignored signs warning of a 10-foot-high limit under the overhead bridge. The Calvary Coach bus was at least 12 feet high.
The crash with the overpass pancaked the roof of the bus, trapping some passengers and injuring 35. Three of the bus passengers were in critical condition. The most seriously injured passenger was transported to Boston Medical Center. Two others with serious injuries were transported to Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The rest of the victims were transported to Beth Israel Deaconess.
Passengers on the bus were high school students and adult chaperones who were returning home to Philadelphia after a tour of Harvard.
