Prospect Heights police responded about 2:00 PM Friday to a report of a shots fired at Super 8 Motel, 540 North Milwaukee Avenue. Police received a report that six shots were heard and someone shot at the motel building. A group of suspects were last seen on bicycles heading northbound on the west side of Milwuakee Avenue. Police received a report that a male/black subject shot a long gun — possibly a shot gun. He was reported wearing a blue T-shirt or polo shirt — possibly with writing on it. A second subject was described as a male/Hispanic wearing a gray hoodie and long jean shorts. The third subject was described as a male/Hispanic with a green shirt and carrying a baseball bat.
Two juvenile subjects residing in Prospect Heights were apprehended near the clubhouse of Willow Woods Condominiums, about 500 feet south of the Super 8 Motel. One subject was a male/black without a shirt and one subject was a male/Hispanic.
A K-9 unit responded to the scene, possibly to search for a third suspect or the weapon — not confirmed. A handgun believed to be hidden by the suspects was discovered nearby.
The crime is believed to be gang related, and according to the suspects, was retaliation for shots fired the day before in the same neighborhood. Police responded to shot fired the prior day (Thursday), but no suspects or victims were discovered. One male teen was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member, and felony mob action. The second teen was charged with felony mob action. A person that was the target of the shots fled the scene.
