Thousands of University of Kentucky fans swarmed the streets of Lexington last night after the men’s basketball team beat cross-state rival Louisville. At least one car was set on fire.

Lexington firefighters responded to at least 39 fire calls and twelve EMS call last night related to rioting by Kentucky fans.

In four NCAA men’s basketball tournament meetings, the Kentucky and Louisville are tied at two games apiece. The Kentucky-Louisville basketball sea of blue vs. sea of red rivalry was ranked the third best rivalry in all of college sports by Basketball Hall of Fame contributor Dick Vitale in February, 2012. Yesterday’s game was the deepest meeting in tournament play.

The University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville are the two largest universities in the state of Kentucky. Their regular yearly meeting is known as the Battle for the Bluegrass, which Kentucky also won 69-62.
