April 13–15, 2012 Tornado Outbreak Kills Six Near Woodward, Oklahoma

VIDEO of tornado damage from Woodward, Oklahoma: At least 120 tornadoes were reported across the Midwest and Plains states early Sunday. The severe weather left at least six people dead in Oklahoma and hundreds of thousands of families without electricity.

The Woodward tornado was the only fatal tornado of about 120 tornadoes that struck on Saturday, April 14, 2012 and Sunday, April 15, 2012 — part of an outbreak that struck Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Arkansas, South Dakota and Texas. The Woodward tornado was given a preliminary rating of an EF-3 tornado, which is associated with 136 to 165 mph winds. Historically, Woodward, Oklahoma experienced a tornado that killed 107 people on April 9, 1947.

Following the Woodward tornado and last weekend’s outbreak, 62 people have been killed by tornadoes in 2012.


In 2011, 550 people were killed by tornadoes. Two major deadly outbreaks occurred in 2011.

The 2011 Super Outbreak (April 25–28, 2011) affected Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia caused 322 fatalities and 24 indirect fatalities.

The Joplin tornado and other tornadoes part of the May 21-26, 2011 Tornado Outbreak affected Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, and Oklahoma, and caused 180 fatalities and six indirect fatalities.

VIDEO of tornado damage from Tahlequah, Oklahoma: Severe weather and at least one possible tornado struck Eastern Oklahoma on Sunday, knocking down trees and damaging or destroying homes. The storm was part of the same system that killed six people near Woodward, OK.
