A gunman killed a police officer and another person after a traffic stop Thursday on the campus of Virginia Tech, the school said, and students and faculty were told to stay inside university buildings as police searched for the suspect.

During a traffic stop on campus, a male/white offender shot and killed a Virginia Tech police officer near the Cassell Colisium parking lot and then fled on foot to a parking lot known as the Cage. The offender apparently committed suicide at the Cage parking lot off of Duckpond Road, about one-half mile northwest of the Cassell Coliseum. A second body and a weapon were found at the Cage parking lot.

A Virginia Tech university alert released immediately after the shooting described the shooter as a white male wearing gray sweat pants, a gray hat with a neon green brim, a maroon hoodie and a backpack.

A previous shooting and massacre on the Virginia Tech campus occurred on April 16, 2007, when Seung-Hui Cho, a senior English major at the school, killed 32 students and faculty before killing himself.

The shooting occurred while Virginia Tech’s police chief and other university officials were scheduled to testify in Washington, D.C., during the university’s appeal of a $55,000 fine for violating the federal Clery Act by not sending out a timely warning during the 2007 shootings that claimed 33 lives.
