Hurricane Irene is beginning to make presence known in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. In Kill Devil Hills, the winds are getting stronger and the surf is churning up.

The far end of the fishing pier in Atlantic Beach has succumbed to the heavy surf stirred up by Hurricane Irene. About 100 feet of the structure is still standing, but the end of the pier has washed away.

Hurricane Irene’s outer bands slammed the North Carolina coast early Saturday with smashing winds and drenching rains. Officials said the storm lost some power but is still whipping up 90 mph winds as it moves up the Atlantic Coast.

The Weather Channel forecast locations and timing of Hurricane Irene along the East Coast Saturday and Sunday.
