INTERVIEW: Myrtle Rose was taking a flight in the northwest suburbs of Chicago when the 75-year-old pilot looked out her cockpit window to see two F-16 fighter jets. When she landed, police told her she had strayed into restricted airspace during a visit by President Barack Obama.

Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled from Toledo by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and intercepted a Kitfox Model 2 aircraft at 5:34 p.m. Thursday after the Kitfox Model 2, piloted by Myrtle Rose, flew into temporarily restricted airspace. Air traffic controllers had been unable contact the pilot on Wednesday afternoon.

Rose turned the kit airplane around and returned to Mill Rose Farm Airport after the encounter with the F-16’s, but she thought the pilots of the F-16’s were just admiring her small aircraft. She also complemented the on their courtesy for not leaving her vulnerable to their jet wash (wake turbulence).

Myrtle Rose said she filled in a report with the Federal Aviation Administration. She could face a fine, a pilot’s license suspension, or there could be no action at all by the FAA.

The NORAD command has three subordinate regional headquarters: the Alaskan NORAD Region at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska; the Canadian NORAD Region at Winnepeg, Manitoba; and the Continental NORAD Region at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida. The command is poised both tactically and strategically in our nation’s capital to provide a multilayered defense to detect, deter and prevent potential threats flying over the airspace of the United States and Canada. NORAD is authorized to monitor, shadow, divert from flight path, direct to land and/or destroy platforms deemed a potential threat to North America.
