Ask Paul B: Respect The Elderly Or Else!

#ad▼

Dear Paul B,

I will be anonymous to your readers, because I am so embarrassed. I am not a kid, but I acted like the most selfish and spoiled kid a few weeks back. I was going to the store, because I ran out of a certain mix for a dinner entre. My husband and kids are very finnicky about their food. As I was going to the grocery store, a woman who was driving in front of me was so slow, I just couldn’t stand it. I remember being rushed, and wasn’t in the mood for this “tortoise.” I actually took the roadway shoulder to race in front of her, and didn’t even look back. Naturally, when I was checking out at the grocery, guess who is standing behind me? You got it. The elderly woman asked me if she knew who I was, and I really did not. She assured me that if I lived in this area, my kids had attended “her school.’ She had been the principal at my two kids middle school. I told her that I knew who she was and that I was wrong. She did NOT let me off the hook as easily as I had hoped. She gave me a tongue lashing that I will not soon forget. I can now laugh about it, but I was extremely upset at the time. I told my husband and kids, and they all laughed at me for being “busted.”
I did learn about my malfeasance, and even at 49, we can all learn that driving a car is a privilege, a responsibility and accountable. Be safe.

Dear “Rita”,

This is an outstanding letter and worthwhile lesson. Typically, when we act foolishly, there is a policeman or “other person” there when we least expect it. This sounds like one of MY experiences. Glad you had no accident with the former Principal. I am sure that your kids had a hoot of a good time with this event. No doubt, you will be telling this story for a long, long time. So too, will your “new and improved” safe-driving serve you longer. Thanks so much for sharing with us. I chose a different name for you, Rita. You always looked like a Rita to me. Drive safely, my dear.
