Ten Times More People Have Died from Tornado Deaths This Year 2011, Compared to Last Year

The U.S. is only halfway through what is traditionally considered tornado season and there have already been more than 500 deaths from twisters. 2011 is already the deadliest year since 1953.

2011 IS WORST TORNADO SEASON SINCE 1953

As of May 24, 2011 there have been 1,208 tornadoes reported in the United States for the year (875 of the tornadoes were confirmed).

The tornado outbreaks of 2011 so far make it the deadliest year in the United States since 1953.

Most deaths occurred in the April 27, 2011 outbreak (320 deaths) including hardest hit Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and the May 22, 2011 outbreak (122+ deaths) including hardest hit Joplin, Missouri.

There have been four EF5 tornadoes reported so far in 2011. Tornado season is normally considered from April to July when peak numbers of tornadoes occur, but tornadoes can occur at any time of the year and have even occurred in December and January (See The Cardinal — Tornado vs. Freight Train Video Archive: Freight Train Dereailed by Tornado Near Harvard, Illinois).
