Arlington Heights police responded about 6:10 p.m. Thursday to a report of a suspicious looking pickle jar covered with electrical tape at Banta Park, in the 0-99 block of North Waterman Avenue. The jar was located on the east side of the park, which is located between Phelps and Waterman, just south of Miner Street.

The jar was suspicious enough to activate a call to the Cook County Bomb Squad. The squad detonated the jar at about 8:15 p.m. Thursday. No official word if the jar was a hazard or was just a prank. The fire department was not called to the scene, and was not on standby at the scene. A small crowd of youths and adults gathered in the neighborhood as the jar was safely detonated.

Police notified the dispatch center that a loud boom was expected … in case citizens called 9-1-1 to report the boom.
