Firecracker, Possibly M-80: Starts Apartment Fire, Injures Infant, Other Adults on North Central Ave, Chicago

UPDATE: Johnnal Walker charged today with one count of aggravated arson for Monday night’s fire at a multi-unit building on the 700 block of Central Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood.

Chicago police, firefighters and paramedics responded about 9:00 p.m. Monday .to an apartment fire in the 700 block of North Central Avenue after a fireworks detonation started a fire in a second floor apartment.

One person was rescued through a window and a firefighter’s ladder. Other people jumped with assistance from Chicago police officers.


An infant was critically injured in the fire and at least four other people injured. The count of the injured is not confirmed because residents may have arrived at hospitals on their own.

An EMS Plan 1, which automatically sends five ambulances, two fire trucks, two engines, a battalion chief and an EMS field officer, was request to the scene last night.

About 50 residents at the apartment are displaced. The local American Red Cross chapter was working to provide food and shelter for the residents.
