Thieves dug a 100-foot-long ventilated and lit tunnel from a neighboring building into an Argentine bank — Banco Provincia and emptied the contents of up to 140 safety deposit boxes, officials said Monday. There were about 1,400 boxes located in the bank.

The offenders dug a 100-foot, lit tunnel from a building space they rented next-door to the Banco Provincia in the Belgrano district in Buenos Aires. The crime is believed to have occurred over the New Year’s weekend. Seismic alarms were detected, and police responded, but it is unknown why the police did not investigate inside the bank.

Many Argentine citizens started using safety deposit boxes after a financial crash in 2001. No estimate on the amount of proceeds that were stolen because customers were not required to declare what they were storing in the safety deposit boxes.
