Two Serious Accidents on Route 53/I-290 Friday Night

Rolling Meadows firefighter/paramedics responded just after 8:00 p.m. Friday to a five-car crash in southbound lane one (median express lane) of Route 53. The crash was just north of Algonquin Road at the split of the express and local lanes.

A fire command report announced 10 victims or passengers — all with minor injuries. Some vehicles had serious damage, and at least one vehicle was spun around. Several impacts were rear-end collisions. Two southbound lanes were blocked for about one hour after the crash.

Unknown how many victims were transported to the hospital.

Second Crash — a Rollover
Elk Grove Village firefighter/paramedics and Schaumburg firefighter/paramedics responded to the next crash. The second crash, about 8:40 p.m. Friday, was a two-car and one rollover crash on northbound I-290/Route 53 just north of Higgins Road. Both cars were off the highway in the brush. A victim in the rollover car was trapped in the car and extricated quickly. The victim was transported to the hospital. A victim in the other car was released by paramedics.

Firefighter/paramedics did an extensive search for a possible third victim, and used a thermal imager along with flashlights in the brush near the accident scene and as far as south of Higgins Road. No victim was found.

At least two lanes of northbound I-290/Route 53 were closed during rescue operations. There was a report that the roof of the car that was overturned was torn off as it rolled.
