Svetoslav Detchev Killed in Rear-End Crash on I-90 Hampshire-Marengo Toll Plaza

Svetoslav Detchev, 26, of Palatine, was killed when his vehicle failed to stop about 1:00 a.m. Thursday and hit a truck that was stopped for construction traffic on Interstate 90 near the Hampshire/Marengo Toll Plaza. Detchev’s 1995 Mercury Villager and the truck were both westbound when the crash occurred. Svetoslav Detchev had to be extricated from the mini-van and died at the scene.

Detchev, who moved to the U.S. from Bulgaria in 1999, is survived by his wife and a 7-month-old daughter.

The crash occurred among a series of devastating crashes this week:

Ronald Shlifka, 81, of Lincolnshire, was killed after he attempted to make a U-Turn from the right lane of westbound Route 173, and crossed the westbound left lane in his Cadillac DeVille. He was T-boned on the driver’s side by Jeep driven by a 19 year-old woman. Ronald Shlifka died of multiple injuries, and his wife a passenger received minor injuries.

A truck rear-ended a BMW on Interstate 90 near Beverly Road about 10:05 p.m. Tuesday. Three people suffered minor injuries, but traffic was blocked for hours as both vehicles caught fire (See The Cardinal I-90 Truck-Car Crash with Fire Near Beverly Rd, Hoffman Estates)
