A confusing intersection …
The location callouts are confusing because Route 14 is Miner Street east of River Road and west of Rand Road. Route 14 is Dempster east of Rand Road. Even more confusing is the fact that Route 14 is Northwest Highway in Arlington Heights through downtown Des Plaines. But in eastern Des Plaines Northwest Highway is south of Miner/Dempster, but it is NOT Route 14. Going east, Dempster picks up the Route 14 number. Also Rand Road is NOT Route 12 in that area. In summary, two streets change names at the crash intersection. Going southeast Rand Road becomes Northwest Highway. Going east, Miner Street becomes Dempster.

As of February 2010 …
The overhead traffic signal on the southeast corner of the intersection has a sign for Northwest Highway cross-street for east- and westbound traffic.

The overhead traffic signal on the northwest corner of the intersection has a sign for Rand Road cross-street for east- and westbound traffic.

The overhead traffic signal on the southwest corner of the intersection has a sign for Miner Street cross-street for northwest- and southeastbound traffic.

The overhead traffic signal on the northeast corner of the intersection has a sign for Dempster cross-street for northwest- and southeastbound traffic.
