Florida Freeze: 100,000 Tropical Fish Killed, Stunned Turtles, Record Electric Use

Florida is known as the only mainland state with a subtropical and tropical climate, but this week bitter cold has stunned Floridians. At Breen Acres Aquatics in Loxahatchee Groves just north of Miami, freezing temperatures formed ice on 76 ponds that hold tropical fish livestock. About 100,000 tropical fish were killed, causing an estimated $535,000 loss.

For the first time in 30 years, Miami Metrozoo closed because of freezing temperatures.

Sunday set a record at Florida Power and Light — 23,500 megawatt-hours.

At least one day last week Caribou, Maine was warmer than several cities in Florida.


NASA scientists, teamed up with conservationists, have come to the rescue of hundreds of turtles from unusually cold water temperatures off Cape Canaveral, Florida.

JAN 09 2009 — Florida turtles are temporarily being placed at inland locations with warmer temperatures. They are being rescued by NASA scientists and area conservationists.
