Patrick Botterman Dies: Age 44, Democratic Committeeman Dead from Heart Attack

Patrick Botterman
1964-2008

Patrick Botterman, 44, died Monday, March 10, after suffering a heart attack following lunch in the Loop. He was just leaving the Democratic Leadership Conference in downtown Chicago. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Patrick Botterman served as Democratic Committeeman since 1993.

Patrick Botterman joined Eugenia Chapman’s campaign while he was still a student at Arlington High School. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1982. Chapman was a suburban Democrat in the state House from 1965 to 1983.

In 1989, Botterman managed Michael Schroeder’s first campaign for Arlington Heights trustee. Schroeder later became Mayor (Village President) of Arlington Heights to fill a vacancy in 1992.

In 1993, Patrick Botterman managed the campaign of Michael Schroeder for Arlington Mayor — running against the victor Arlene Mulder.

In 1996, Botterman directed the campaign for state Senator Terry Link.

Botterman was elected to the Harper College board in 1998 and served until he lost re-election in 2003.

Botterman organized a slate of Democrats and moderate Republicans who ran for local offices in 2001. Botterman also supported Republican Michael Schroeder in his successful election as Wheeling Township Supervisor.

In 2004, Democratic strategist Kevin Lampe persuaded Botterman to join him temporarily on former Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun’s presidential campaign.

In 2006, he ran the campaign for state Sen. Dan Kotowski of Park Ridge.

In 2007, Patrick Botterman was re-elected on the Harper College board.

Friends say he will be remembered for his willingness toward personal sacrifice to work hard and stand up to heavy political resistance, and for his sense of humor.

A Heckler at a Palatine Benefit for NIU Valentine’s Day Shooting Memorials?

Yep. Just after midnight — very, very early on Tuesday — Palatine police were looking for a heckler of the benefactors at a Palatine bar. Durtie Nellies was holding a Charity Concert to benefit two NIU-related funds: the DeKalb-Sycamore Community Memorial Fund and NIU’s February 14 Scholarship Fund.

The DeKalb and Sycamore Chambers, in cooperation with the DeKalb County
Community Foundation, have established a Community Memorial Fund. The
501c3 non-profit corporation fund is collecting donations to be used for a community remembrance.

Northern Illinois University has established a scholarship fund to honor the memory of the students slain in the February 14 tragedy. The February 14 Student Scholarship Fund will receive gifts through the NIU Foundation for the general scholarship fund and work through the NIU Scholarship Committee to distribute scholarships to deserving students in the name of those who lost their lives in the shooting at Cole Hall.

A total of six people, all residents of Illinois, died at the Northern Illinois University (NIU) shooting on February 14, 2008: Gayle Dubowski, 20 — Carol Stream; Catalina Garcia, 20 — Cicero; Julianna Gehant, 32 — Meriden; Steven Kazmierczak, 27 — Champaign (perpetrator); Ryanne Mace, 19 — Carpentersville; Daniel Parmenter, 20 — Elmhurst.

A total of sixteen people were injured at the February 14 NIU shooting: Lauren
Debrauwere — Lake Barrington; Samantha Dehner, 20 — Carol Stream; J.D.
Donohue, 19 — Rolling Meadows; Ryne Erickson — Des Plaines; Brian Karpes,
27 — Rolling Meadows; Patrick Korellis, 22 — Lindenhurst; Jeff Malina –
Glenview; Harold Ng, 21 — Mundelein; Joseph Peterson, 26 — DeKalb (course
instructor); Unnum Rahman, 19 — Plainfield; Maria Ruiz Santana, 19 –
Elgin; Jeremy Walker, 20 — Caledonia; Sherman Yau, 20 — Naperville.

A man wearing all gray with a red hat was walking up to people — pointing his finger like a gun and saying, “Hey, I’m a hit man!”

Nobody was amused.

News comes fast every day. Some of it is incomplete. Some of it is wrong. Often it is not connected with past news, so the information on TV, newspapers and magazines is often conflicting and confusing. Many people just turn off the news. The negativity is too much. Too many questions and not enough answers. Overly stressed, these people are wise enough to focus on affirmations and hope, but they miss opportunities and cautions. The Cardinal goal is to process news -- to inform and encourage connection of information, adaptation to news, and ultimately affirmation and the pursuit of excellence in human effort: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
