A three-car crash occurred at the intersection of Arlington Heights Road and Miner Street about 1:15 p.m. Friday afternoon. The Halloween afternoon accident looked serious, but fortunately injuries were minor. At least one person was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. The accident occurred just outside the circle drive at Avalon Arlington Heights (formerly 200 Arlington Place).

Arlington Heights Road was blocked in both directions for about 45 minutes. Miner Street was also blocked for about 45 minutes. The crash involved three sedans — one car was a 303 Taxi and one of the cars rolled over upon impact. The taxi appeared to have possibly been waiting, stopped at the eastbound right lane at a stop light when the accident occurred.

Muslim settlers, mostly from Bangladesh, have moved to this Hindu and tribal-dominated region, leading to increased ethnic tensions. Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul-Jihad al Islami (HuJI) is the main suspect in Thursday’s attack. HuJI was suspected by Assam police the discovery of RDX (plastic) explosives by U.S. private intelligence firm Stratfor.

Dozens of militant separatist groups are active in India’s northeast, an isolated region between Bangladesh, Bhutan, China and Myanmar — only a thin corridor connecting with the rest of India. Separatists accuse the central government in New Delhi, 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) to the west, of exploiting the region’s natural resources while doing little for the indigenous people. Most separatists are ethnically closer to Burma and China than to India. More than 10,000 people have died in separatist violence over the past decade in the region.

The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was also suspected, but police and security experts say the separatist group may have only played a supporting or logistical role in the Indian blasts.

Seven people were injured in Guwahati on Friday after angry residents protesting against the blasts clashed with police near one blast site.

At St. John United Church of Christ, 308 N. Evergreen Ave., in Arlington Heights between 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, and 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24 someone broke a ground-level window and poured accelerant through the broken window and attempted to light the fluid. Only materials on the outer window ignited.

A reward is being offered for information leading to arrest of the person who tried to start the fire. Anyone with information on the fire and crime is urged to call Arlington Heights Crime Stoppers at (847) 590-STOP. Callers are guaranteed anonymity and may qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

OCT 28 2008 — An apartment/townhouse fire was stopped with a second alarm mutual aid fire response at the 1600 block of Woodduck Lane in Wheeling about 4:00 a.m. Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Glenview, Mount Prospect and other fire departments assisted Wheeling Fire Department. Two people were injured and transported to a local hospital.
