Israeli Military Resonds to Hamas Rockets with Air Assault on Gaza Strip

SAT DEC 27 2008 — Israeli bombers and rocket-firing helicopters destroyed multiple Hamas security locations in less than five minutes after Palestinian militants had fired about 300 rockets and mortars at Israeli targets over the past week.

Israel has responded to Hamas rocket attacks beginning with an air assault on 320 sites since the middle of the day Saturday.

One Israeli attack targeted a house in the Jebaliya refugee camp, killing seven people, but the Hamas activist was not there.

In another air assault, an Islamic Jihad commander was killed while he walking near his house.

Israeli military also exploded Hamas tunnels between Gaza and Israel. Hamas militants were killed in those explosions.

Naval vessels had also bombarded targets in Gaza.

According to Palestinian medical personnel, eight children under the age of 17 were killed in two separate Israeli airstrikes Sunday night. U.N. humanitarian chief John Holmes reported that at least 62 women and children have been killed and 1,400 men, women and children had been injured.

Arlington Heights Police are investigating a stabbing near the front steps of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library just before 6:00 p.m. Saturday.  The stabbing victim was found at the corner of Miner Street and Dunton Avenue. Police officers originally cordoned off the entire block of Dunton Avenue at 500 North Dunton Avenue, but later reduced the police tape to the area around the steps of the front door of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library at 500 North Dunton Avenue.

Police are also holding a silver Kia Sportage at the northwest corner of Miner Street and Dunton Avenue.

There are possibly witnesses to the stabbing.  Police are searching trash bins at the library and at the train station, and are canvassing the neighborhood near the library to see if there are any other witness.  Developing …

* FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING

* WIDESPREAD…AND POTENTIALLY SIGNIFICANT FLOODING IS EXPECTED TO

DEVELOP FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY. RAIN AND EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS

WILL PRODUCE WIDESPREAD RAINFALL TOTALS OF ONE AND A HALF TO THREE

INCHES FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT…WITH LOCALIZED RAINFALL

TOTALS IN EXCESS OF THREE INCHES POSSIBLE. IN ADDITION TO THE HEAVY

RAIN…TEMPERATURES WARMING WELL ABOVE FREEZING WILL CAUSE EXISTING

SNOW AND ICE COVER TO RAPIDLY MELT WHICH WILL INCREASE RUN OFF…WHICH

WILL ALREADY BE VERY HIGH DUE TO THE FROZEN GROUND. ALSO…THE BITTER

COLD TEMPERATURES OF THE PAST WEEK HAVE CAUSED ICE TO FORM ON MANY

RIVERS…THIS ICE WILL LIKELY BECOME DISLODGED AS TEMPERATURES RISE

ABOVE FREEZING AND STREAM FLOW INCREASES. THIS WILL RESULT IN A HIGHER

CHANCE OF LOCALIZED FLOODING DUE TO ICE JAMS. FINALLY…MANY DRAINAGE

SYSTEMS ARE CURRENTLY BLOCKED BY SNOW AND ICE COVER…SO AS HEAVY RAIN

FALLS FLOODING WILL LIKELY DEVELOP EVEN IN URBANIZED AREAS THAT DO

NOT FLOOD OFTEN.

* IF CURRENT FORECAST RAINFALL AMOUNTS OCCUR AS EXPECTED THEN

WIDESPREAD AND SIGNIFICANT FLOODING OF CREEKS…STREAMS…AND LOW

LYING AREAS WILL OCCUR. IN ADDITION…MANY OF THE LARGER MAIN STEM

RIVERS WILL GO INTO FLOOD. GIVEN THE FORECAST MAGNITUDE OF THE

UPCOMING SNOW MELT AND HEAVY RAINFALL EVENT… MAJOR FLOODING AND NEAR

RECORD CRESTS MAY OCCUR ON SOME OF THE LARGER MAIN STEM

RIVERS…INCLUDING THE DES PLAINES… KANKAKEE…VERMILLION…LITTLE

CALUMET…IROQUOIS…AND ILLINOIS.

THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR VERY SERIOUS AND POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING

FLOODING TO DEVELOP THIS WEEKEND…WITH SOME AREAS THAT TYPICALLY DO

NOT FLOOD POSSIBLY EVEN BECOMING INUNDATED WITH WATER. PEOPLE LIVING

IN FLOOD PRONE AND LOW LYING AREAS SHOULD PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO

LATER FORECASTS AND WARNINGS FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND BE

PREPARED TO EVACUATE TO HIGHER GROUND ON SHORT NOTICE. EVERYONE IN AND

NEAR THE WATCH AREA SHOULD BE PREPARED TO TAKE QUICK ACTION SHOULD

FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.

PEOPLE PLANNING TO TRAVEL THIS WEEKEND SHOULD ALSO MONITOR FORECASTS

CLOSELY…AS FLOODING COULD POTENTIALLY IMPACT ROADS MAKING TRAVEL

DIFFICULT.

News comes fast every day. Some of it is incomplete. Some of it is wrong. Often it is not connected with past news, so the information on TV, newspapers and magazines is often conflicting and confusing. Many people just turn off the news. The negativity is too much. Too many questions and not enough answers. Overly stressed, these people are wise enough to focus on affirmations and hope, but they miss opportunities and cautions. The Cardinal goal is to process news -- to inform and encourage connection of information, adaptation to news, and ultimately affirmation and the pursuit of excellence in human effort: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
