When Does Cabela’s Open? The Huge Outdoors, Hunting, Boating and Fishing Store Opens Friday September 21, 2007 in Hoffman Estates

An impressive front entrance to Cabela’s (minus the bronze statue that has yet to be unveiled).

Currently only 19 other giant Cabela’s retail stores in the United States. The Chicago area is about to gain a big presence in retail hunting, fishing and outdoor gear. So big, it’s a tourist attraction, in fact.

The 185,000-square-foot, large-format superstore, which includes boat sales and a boat service department, is located 20 minutes from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport within the Prairie Stone Business Park at I-90 and Route 59 near the Sears Centre [MAP/SAT]. Prairie Stone, which also serves as the headquarters for Sears Holdings Corp., is a 780-acre, master-planned business park surrounded by a forest preserve that captures the beauty of the surrounding Midwestern landscape.

Up to four million people are expected to visit the Hoffman Estates store annually, making it one of the top tourist attractions in the state. The Hoffman Estates store showcases the best of the outdoors in a spectacular indoor shopping experience. Cabela’s stores are known as top-notch educational and entertainment attractions. Equivalent to nearly three football fields in size, Cabela’s is much more than a retail store and will provide unique attractions for every member of the family including:

Hundreds of animals in extensive, museum-quality dioramas, including an African scene, that re-create animals in action in their native habitats

Cabela’s hallmark two-story Conservation Mountain, complete with running waterfalls and stream, a trout pond and wild game in their distinctive habitats — a huge waterfall greets visitor as they come in the front door

Huge 16,000-gallon, walk-through aquarium, stocked with freshwater fish, including those native to Illinois

Customers will be greeted outside Cabela’s by an original bronze signature sculpture. The identity of the sculpture will be revealed at a special unveiling on Thursday, September 20
Other highlights include a restaurant, laser arcade, boat showroom and maintenance shop, furniture department, gun library, general store, fly fishing shop and gift shop.

New boats lined up outside the new Cabella’s for the Chicago metro area — right here in Hoffman Estates.

Cabela’s Hoffman Estates store hours will be Monday – Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 9:30 p.m., and 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Sunday. The store address is 5225 Prairie Stone Parkway Hoffman Estates, Illinois. 60192.

Baghdad Boil or Leishmaniasis Skin Infection Discovered in North Texas

Texas doctors have identified nine cases of the skin disease leishmaniasis in patients who have not traveled to any area that is known to have the disease.

The infectious disease skin disease, known as Baghdad boil, is common in the Middle East, South America, and Mexico.

Leishmaniasis sore on the back of a hand.

The infection causes large sores that look like boils and usually last six to 12 months. The disease is caused by a single-celled parasite called Leishmania, and special cultures must be done to confirm the diagnosis. The skins sores of leishmaniasis erupt weeks to months after the person affected is bitten by sand flies. Other consequences, which can become manifest anywhere from a few months to years after infection, include fever, damage to the spleen and liver, and anaemia.

The North Texas appears to be Leishmania mexicana — a less dangerous than other forms of the parasite.

Doctors suspect human infection begins when a sand fly bites a rodent called the burrowing wood rat, which carries the parasite. When the sand fly later bites a person, leishmaniasis sores may develop.

Leishmaniasis is present in Iraq and was contracted by a number of the troops involved in the 2003 invasion of that country and the subsequent occupation. The soldiers nicknamed the disease the Baghdad boil. It has been reported by Agence France-Presse that more than 650 U.S. soldiers may have experienced the disease between the start of the invasion in March 2003 and late 2004.

In fact, U.S. troops have experienced leishmaniasis cases in the Middle East already previously to the 2003 invasion, during the time of the previous Gulf conflict, when a large number of soldiers were stationed in Saudi Arabia. Of the 32 cases that were recorded by the U.S. military for that period (1990-1991), 20 were cutaneous, and 12 were the visceral type (a severe form in which parasites migrate to vital organs).

Leishmaniasis is one of the famous causes of a markedly enlarged spleen, which may become larger even than the liver. There are four main forms of leishmaniasis:

Visceral leishmaniasis – the most serious form and potentially fatal if untreated.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis – the most common form which causes a sore at the bite site, which heal in a few months to a year, leaving an unpleasant looking scar. This form can progress to any of the other three forms.

Diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis – this form produces widespread skin lesions which resemble leprosy and is particularly difficult to treat.

Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis – commences with skin ulcers which spread causing tissue damage to (particularly) nose and mouth
