Paris Hilton Sentenced to Jail

Paris Hilton has been sentenced to 45 days in jail after a series of violations that started with a DUI arrest on September 7, 2006.

Original DUI Arrest
Hilton, 26, pleaded no contest in January to reckless driving stemming from the September 7 arrest in Hollywood when she appeared intoxicated and failed a field sobriety test. She had a blood-alcohol level of .08 percent, the level at which an adult driver is in violation of the law.

She was sentenced to 36 months probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines.

Two other traffic stops and failure to enroll in a mandated alcohol education program, are what landed the socialite back in court.

Driving on a Suspended License on January 15, 2007
On Jan. 15, Hilton was pulled over by California Highway Patrol. Officers informed her that she was driving on a suspended license and she signed a document acknowledging that she was not to drive, according to papers filed in Superior Court. Paris Hilton’s Spokesman, Elliot Mintz said at the time Hilton wasn’t aware her license was suspended, but a copy of the document Hilton signed on Jan. 15 was found in the car’s glove compartment.

Speeding with Headlights Off at 11 p.m. February 27 and Violating Probation
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies stopped Hilton on Feb. 27 and charged her with violating her probation. Police said she was pulled over at about 11 p.m. after they saw her car speeding with its headlights off.

Failure to Enroll in Alcohol Education Program
Hilton also failed to enroll in a required alcohol education program by Feb. 12. As of April 17, she had not enrolled, prosecutors said.

Jail Judgment
Paris Hilton arrived to court 10 minutes late. Most of her defense was based on her claim that she didn’t know she shouldn’t be driving because her attorneys and spokesman told her it was O.K. to drive. Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer, who ruled the hearing, called Mintz’s testimony worthless and expressed disbelief at Hilton’s lawyer Howard Weitzman.

After the closing arguments by a city prosecutor, Hilton’s mother, Kathy Hilton shouted, “Can I have your autograph?” Then in an interview she responded to a reporter’s question about the judge’s decision, “What do you think? This is pathetic and disgusting, a waste of taxpayer money with all this nonsense. This is a joke.”

Hilton must go to jail in suburban Lynwood by June 5 or face 90 days in jail.

Defense attorney Howard Weitzman said he would appeal.

DNA Strand May Identify Early or Young Heart Attack Risk Victims

Scientists from two independent teams have discovered a strand of DNA that is associated with a dramatic increase in the risk of coronary heart disease and doubles the chances of younger people suffering a heart attack prematurely.

The high-risk stretch of genes is common among Caucasian populations, with up to a quarter carrying copies that boost the risk of heart disease by 40% and increase the lifetime risk of a heart attack by 60%.

Early-onset heart attacks, occurring in men under 50 and women under 60, were found to be twice as likely among those who inherited the high-risk gene sequence from both their mother and father.

The strand of DNA, reported in the prestigious US journal Science today, is believed to be the most important genetic factor for heart disease yet found.

Two research teams were involved in the newly reported results. One team, a Reykjavik-based biotech company called deCODE, hopes to have a test for the gene variant on chromosome 9p21 available by the end of the year, to identify people most at risk of developing heart disease later in life.

Another team in Canada, led by Ruth McPherson at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, studied 23,000 participants and published the results in Science. The researchers identified a common allele (DNA coding) on Chromosome 9 associated with coronary heart disease. Homozygotes (people with two identical genes on corresponding chromosomes) for the risk allele comprise 20-25% of Caucasians and have an approximate 30-40% increased risk of CHD.

A person’s familial history of heart disease is still the best predictor of their risk of heart attack.

Josh Hancock Killed in DUI Accident with Parked Tow Truck on Interstate 64

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock was killed instantly from head injuries while he was driving under the influence of alcohol and talking on his cell phone. Marijuana was found in the rented Ford Explorer he was driving. Josh Hancock’s blood-alcohol level was 0.157, almost twice Missouri’s legal limit of 0.08

Medical examiner Michael Graham said at a news conference Friday that the 29-year-old reliever was dead “within seconds” from head injuries in the crash early Sunday on westbound Interstate 64 near the Forest Park exit in west St. Louis [MAP/SAT]. His vehicle hit the back of a tow truck parked on the highway to clear a previous accident.

Hancock was on his cell phone for two to three minutes with a young woman, Brooke N. Rollberg, who was calling to ask for tickets to Sunday’s game. The call ended abruptly Sunday, April 29, 2007 at 12:41 a.m.

KMOV-TV surveillance video along Interstate 64 shows accident impact at 00:41:27 CDT or 01:14/03:50 elapsed on clip or 02:36 remaining on clip (mightygringo85).

Bill Clinton Says Health Disasters Are Looming

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Former President Bill Clinton said Friday that disasters such as worldwide famine and an obesity epidemic could destroy the U.S. health care system unless politicians begin to plan ahead and cooperate on these issues.

Clinton, speaking at a forum sponsored by Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, said governments fail to act even when disasters are anticipated because leaders are distracted fulfilling campaign promises and responding to immediate emergencies. Big-picture planning gets “crowded out,” he said.

“This is coming,” Clinton said. “And I know there is no great political constituency for it, but we can avert these disasters for not very much money if they can be put into the public debate and people understand clearly what’s going to happen.”

News comes fast every day. Some of it is incomplete. Some of it is wrong. Often it is not connected with past news, so the information on TV, newspapers and magazines is often conflicting and confusing. Many people just turn off the news. The negativity is too much. Too many questions and not enough answers. Overly stressed, these people are wise enough to focus on affirmations and hope, but they miss opportunities and cautions. The Cardinal goal is to process news -- to inform and encourage connection of information, adaptation to news, and ultimately affirmation and the pursuit of excellence in human effort: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
