A Piper Cherokee Cruiser airplane landed on Northwest Highway near Sterling [MAP/SAT] about 8:30 p.m. Friday after running out of gas. The airplane clipped a neutral power line near Baldwin Road, just west of Sterling which knocked the line to the ground. Firefighters evacuated an area of standing water near the downed line to take precautions in case the line was energized. The plane also grazed a red Mini-Cooper just before landing.
No injuries were reported. Northwest Highway was partially blocked as police searched and waited for a mechanic to remove the wings to prepare for ground transportation.
A jet engine car being tested in the back of a warehouse made the noise of a jet explosion, which had at least one 911 caller thinking that a commercial jetliner had crashed nearby. Police and fire equipment rushed to the area of Busse and Estes [MAP/SAT] for a report of a plane crash on Friday afternoon. After searching the area, which is just a little over one mile in a straight line from the edge of Runway 14-R at O’Hare International Airport, they found that a jet car was being tested in the back of a warehouse.
