Northwest Community Hospital Addition: Eight-story South Wing, Parking Deck and More …

The footing and foundation for an eight-story structure is well underway at Northwest Community Hospital. Designed specifically around the needs of patients and their families, the new addition will feature a range of visitor amenities and all private patient rooms to enhance comfort and healing. The new patient bed area will increase the hospital’s staffed bed count from 410 to 488. The new building’s design encourages plenty of natural light and views of nature, and was planned with our mission of family-centered healing in mind.

The project consists of 332,573 square feet of new and remodeled space, and will include:

• A New Entry and Public Lobby
This new welcoming center will provide an attractive, modernized entry point for the facility, making it easier for guests to find their way throughout the hospital.

• An Additional 24-bed Critical Care Unit
The entire second floor will be comprised of this new Critical Care Unit that will feature state-of-the-art technology. Each room will be modeled after those in the current Critical Care unit, which allows for maximum patient privacy and comfort.

• A New Labor and Delivery, and Postpartum Unit
The fourth and fifth floors will be dedicated to Women’s Services, with new Labor and Delivery rooms on the fourth floor–each designed to be a spacious 400 square feet. The 34 private Postpartum rooms on the fifth floor will be comfortable and inviting.

• Three Floors Designed to Care for Surgical Patients
Floors six, seven and eight are each designed to be 34-bed medical/surgical units, with rooms that include private individual baths, space for family members, and overnight accommodations for guests.

• A New Seven-level Sheltered Parking Deck for 780 Cars
To provide convenient parking and shelter against the elements, a new parking garage for 780 cars will be located on the east side of the campus, with two levels below ground level, and five levels above. A glass curtain wall system will provide the deck with the appearance of a building rather than a parking structure.

All construction of this phase of Northwest Community Hospital’s development is expected to be completed by 2010.

Mutated Common Cold Virus Cause of 10 Deaths in Last 18 Months Says CDC

There are more than 50 distinct types of adenoviruses related to human illnesses. They are one cause of the common cold, and also trigger pneumonia and bronchitis. Severe illnesses are more likely in people with weaker immune systems.

A new variant, Ad14, has caused at least 140 illnesses in New York, Oregon, Washington and Texas according to a CDC reoprt Thursday.

New York
In the CDC report, the earliest case of the mutated virus was reported found in an infant girl in New York City, who died last year. The child seemed healthy right after birth, but  became dehydrated and lost appetite. She died 12 days after she was born.

Texas
A 19-year-old Air Force trainee, Paige Renee Villers, died on Aug. 7 due to complications from pneumonia. She was an airman in basic training at Lackland Air Force Base outside San Antonio, Texas where hundreds suffered from “Boot Camp Flu” and where some of those normally healthy military recruits ended up in the intensive care unit.

Oregon
In April, Oregon health officials reported a cluster of cases at a Portland-area hospital.

Washington
In May, Washington health officials reported four hospitalized patients had the Ad14 mutated virus. One, who also had AIDS, died.

Taking extra precaustions to avoid a cold? Follow these simple rules to help prevent catching a cold:

Practice regular hand-washing. Never eat, touch your eyes, nose or mouth before you have washed your hands that have been in contact with public items, such as door handles, merchandise, money, shaken hands, exercise equipment — to name just a few. The virus can survive for weeks on contaminated surfaces.

Disinfect and use antibacterial gels. The chemicals probably don’t kill the cold virus but the mechanical washing probably removes the virus.

Avoid people who are sick — close your eyes and avoid breathing air near the mist where someone has just sneezed.

Get plenty of rest and don’t skip meals or go hungry. Eat balanced meals.

Adenovirus incubation period is two to nine days.

Frequent Hand Washing, especially in Winter can cause hand to become red and dry and can even cause the skin to crack. Use hand lotions to prevent skin aggravation.
