How Not To Make Technology Products

In 2004, the co-president of Microsoft’s platform and services division wrote an e-mail to Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer of Microsoft that “I think our teams lost sight of what bug-free means, what resilience means, what full scenarios mean, what security means, what performance means, how important current applications are, and really understanding what the most important problems our customers face are.”

The head of Microsoft’s Windows development James Allchin also wrote to CEO Steve Ballmer and co-founder Bill Gates writing, “I would buy a Mac if I didn’t work for Microsoft.” The email was presented as evidence last week during an Iowa antitrust trial against Microsoft.

Let’s see … stuff to add to “how not to make a technology product” checklist:
Don’t lose sight of what bug-free means.
Remember resilience.

Remember what full scenarios mean — see the “Forest from the Trees?” Yeah right, the idea is not to see how many times the user can click a mouse and answer questions and confirmations. The full scenario is to get stuff done.

Remember security is important. Lack of security is costly … as in “hidden costly,” which ticks people off.

Remember what performance means. Yep, we don’t like staring at a non-functioning computer wondering what it’s doing. We like to be able to leave work to be with family and friends and maybe get a workout in at the gym.

Here are just two of the Human Interface Guidelines that Apple published way back in the 1980’s.

Forgiveness. If you make an error or change your mind, the computer or device can bring you back to the state before the decision and control was performed. A step backward, one-at-a-time (not total start-over), ability is best.

Perceived Stability. When all of the previous rules are implemented and there are no flickering monitors or noisy equipment, perceived stability is the result.

SideKick Stops Receiving and Sending E-Mails

All of a sudden your T-Mobile SideKick doesn’t send e-mails with the POP3 setup? Yeah … That’s bad, T-Mobile support has a quick fix, though. Plus everything else about the SideKick works so well … I guess this is a minor rant. What to do? You have to delete your account that is not working. Then set it up again. You might want to write down your settings for the account before you delete.

Here’s the play-by-play: In e-mail mode where you see the list of e-mails, with the inbox, etc.; pull your menu down to Settings: Accounts. You will see a list of all of your accounts that you POPPED. Go to the little troublemaker account with the scroll wheel, then click that DIAMOND (upper left button) to get the menu pulled down again. Hit the DISCARD command. Then go back and create a new account and re-enter your tech stuff for the account.

Overall T-Mobile was pretty good on this. My only rant is (rants are) that the account chokes in the first  place. AND, oh yeah

… the voice recognition chick doesn’t always understand what you say,
… I was disconnected once
… and the desktop interface to access to the SideKick on the web from the T-Mobile website seemed to forget that I had a SideKick, so it didn’t know to display the desktop interface.
… the first rep I talked to didn’t know what I was talking about when I asked about the desktop interface having gone missing (I figured out on my own after seeing the ‘Not my phone’ link that I had to tell T-Mobile that I had a SideKick, again).

One nice thing: the phone wait was a little long, so I had the option to have T-Mobile call me back. I chose the callback option and a very polite and helpful data tech rep helped me fast and got me on my way.

Family Dog from Florida Found in McHenry County, Illinois

‘Sam-I-Am,’ a 5-year-old Golden Retreiver missing from a South Tampa, Florida home since a hurricane in 2004 knocked down a backyard fence, was found on Circle Court in Johnsburg, Illinois [MAP/SATELLITE].

Veterinarians from the McHenry County Animal Shelter scanned for the $40 microchip that is implanted in the scruff of a dog’s neck. They were surprised to find that the veterinarian who implanted the microchip was from South Tampa, Florida — about 1200 miles away [SIMULATED TREK].

Dog owner Alice Baines immediately flew to O’Hare International Airport to pick up Sam, who immediately ran across the floor and rested his head on the arm of his owner.

News comes fast every day. Some of it is incomplete. Some of it is wrong. Often it is not connected with past news, so the information on TV, newspapers and magazines is often conflicting and confusing. Many people just turn off the news. The negativity is too much. Too many questions and not enough answers. Overly stressed, these people are wise enough to focus on affirmations and hope, but they miss opportunities and cautions. The Cardinal goal is to process news -- to inform and encourage connection of information, adaptation to news, and ultimately affirmation and the pursuit of excellence in human effort: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
